Our History

Runwell Sports and Social Club was established over 70 years ago to provide sports and recreation facilities to the staff of Runwell Hospital.

Soon after, patients joined the staff to form teams playing football on the picturesque fields in front of the Hospital,

Overlooked by the hilltop church at Rettendon.

Over time, the informal ‘club’ was provided with modest buildings which developed to include changing rooms, function and entertainment rooms, a bar and dedicated areas for the expanding roster of sports, including Lawn Bowls, Rugby and Archery.

The club eventually became the main sports area for Runwell and surrounds and, as the hospital declined, management was handed over to a limited company dedicated to continuing the long tradition of sports and social enjoyment established in the early 1900’s.

We currently have around 17 acres of high quality playing fields hosting the archery range, the Lawn Bowls green, 3 full-size, junior and mini soccer pitches, a Rugby Union pitch and space for model aircraft flying.

The clubhouse is the social hub, comprising a well-stocked, fully licensed bar, lounge and function rooms with large-screen TVs for showing live sports, and a purpose built kitchen offering catering for all occasions from buffets to formal Silver Service dining.

Our indoor activities include Snooker, Pool and Short Mat Bowls, and Adult exercise classes.

Recent development of St Luke’s Park has enabled us to secure funding to expand and improve our sports and social provision for the community, including the building of a new clubhouse and the development of a state-of-the-art ‘3G’ floodlit, all-weather sports pitch.

It’s an exciting time for Runwell Sports and Social Club: we hope you’ll join us!
